Wellbutrin vs SSRIs: How Bupropion Differs and Who It Fits
Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. How bupropion compares with SSRIs on depression, anxiety, sex, weight and sleep, and when the two are used together.
Facts updated October 2026
- Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. It is an NDRI, a medicine that acts on norepinephrine and dopamine and leaves serotonin alone.
- For depression, they work about the same. In seven pooled head to head trials, 47 in 100 people reached remission on each.
- Side effects are where they split. Wellbutrin brings fewer sexual side effects and less weight gain, but more trouble sleeping and dry mouth.
- SSRIs cover more anxiety conditions. Sertraline is FDA approved for OCD, panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety. Wellbutrin is approved for none of them.
- The two are often paired. Your prescriber watches the doses, because bupropion can raise the levels of some SSRIs.
Wellbutrin is not an SSRI, and that one fact explains most of what people notice when they take it. It works on different brain chemicals, so it feels different, helps with different problems and brings different side effects.
Wellbutrin is the brand name for bupropion. SSRIs are a group of antidepressants that includes sertraline (Zoloft), fluoxetine (Prozac), escitalopram (Lexapro) and paroxetine (Paxil). Many people are offered one or the other first. Some end up on both.
At Mindful Sewa we manage both kinds of medicine by video across California. If you are weighing one against the other, the facts below will help you ask sharper questions at your next visit.
What Kind of Medicine Wellbutrin Is
The FDA label calls bupropion an aminoketone antidepressant. It says the drug is chemically unrelated to SSRIs and to other known antidepressants. It weakly blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. It does not block the reuptake of serotonin.
Prescribers often shorten that to NDRI, short for norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. An SSRI works the other way around. It blocks the reuptake of serotonin and does little to the other two.
That split is part of why bupropion has a name for energy and drive. Psychiatric Times cites a meta-analysis that found a positive effect on energy. The sertraline label, by contrast, lists drowsiness among its common side effects.
Bupropion comes as plain tablets and as SR and XL tablets, which release the drug at different speeds. MedlinePlus lists three uses. They are depression, seasonal affective disorder and help to stop smoking, the last one sold as Zyban.
Wellbutrin vs SSRIs Side by Side
The table puts the main facts in one place. Sertraline stands in for the SSRIs, since each SSRI has its own label and its own numbers.
| Point | Wellbutrin (bupropion) | SSRI (sertraline as the example) |
|---|---|---|
| Drug group | NDRI, an aminoketone | Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor |
| Brain chemicals | Norepinephrine and dopamine | Serotonin |
| FDA approved uses | Depression and preventing seasonal depression (XL). Help to stop smoking (Zyban) | Depression, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, social anxiety and PMDD |
| Sexual problems in a large survey | 22 to 25 in 100 | 36 to 43 in 100 across SSRIs |
| Trouble sleeping in trials | 11 in 100 on 300 mg SR, vs 6 on placebo | 20 in 100, vs 13 on placebo |
| Nausea in trials | 13 in 100 on 300 mg SR, vs 8 on placebo | 26 in 100, vs 12 on placebo |
| Weight in short trials | 14 in 100 lost more than 5 pounds on 300 mg SR, vs 6 on placebo | Lower appetite in 7 in 100, vs 2 on placebo |
Do They Work Equally Well for Depression?
The clearest answer comes from a 2005 analysis of seven head to head trials. It pooled data on 732 people taking bupropion and 731 taking sertraline, fluoxetine or paroxetine. After eight weeks, 47 percent reached remission in both groups. On placebo, 36 percent did.
The large STAR*D study then asked what to do after an SSRI fails. People who did not get well on citalopram were moved to bupropion SR, sertraline or venlafaxine XR. About 1 in 4 reached remission on each choice. The three did not differ in any meaningful way.
So the choice rarely comes down to which drug is stronger. It comes down to side effects, other conditions and what you have already tried. The next sections cover each one.
Side Effects Are Where They Split
Sexual Side Effects
A 2002 study surveyed 6,297 adults in 1,101 primary care clinics, each on a single antidepressant. Sexual problems showed up in 22 percent on plain bupropion and 25 percent on bupropion SR. On SSRIs, the rate was 36 to 43 percent. The doctors in that study also guessed far lower rates than patients reported.
The 2005 trial analysis found the same pattern. SSRIs caused clearly more sexual side effects, while bupropion caused no more than placebo. The sertraline label lists ejaculation failure in 8 percent of men, against 1 percent on placebo. Lower sex drive showed up in 6 percent, against 2 percent.
Weight
In the short depression trials on the Wellbutrin label, 14 percent of people on 300 mg a day lost more than 5 pounds. On placebo, 6 percent did. Only 3 percent gained more than 5 pounds, close to the 4 percent on placebo.
The longer seasonal depression trials ran up to six months. There, 23 percent lost more than 5 pounds on bupropion, against 11 percent on placebo. Weight gain was less common on bupropion than on placebo, 11 percent against 21 percent.

Sleep, Jitters and Dry Mouth
Bupropion leans toward stimulation. In the label's depression trials at 300 mg SR, trouble sleeping hit 11 percent against 6 percent on placebo. Dry mouth hit 17 percent against 7 percent. Anxiety was 5 percent against 3 percent.
That is why the label says to take the XL form in the morning. SSRIs can disturb sleep too. The sertraline label shows insomnia in 20 percent, against 13 percent on placebo, and drowsiness in 11 percent.
Seizure Risk
Bupropion carries a dose related seizure risk. On the SR form at up to 300 mg a day, seizures happened in about 1 in 1,000 people in trials. The label says to keep the XL dose at or under 450 mg a day and to raise it slowly.
The label rules bupropion out for people with a seizure disorder, past or present bulimia or anorexia, or anyone suddenly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines or seizure medicine. Psychiatric Times adds some context. A 2018 study of older adults it cites found the seizure risk with bupropion about the same as with other antidepressants.
What About Anxiety?
Many people hear that Wellbutrin makes anxiety worse. A 2008 analysis pooled 10 trials and 2,890 patients with depression to test that. Bupropion and SSRIs eased anxiety symptoms by about the same amount, at about the same speed.
The most anxious patients are a slight exception. Psychiatric Times notes that SSRIs had a small edge in that group. About 17 people would need an SSRI instead of bupropion for one extra person to benefit.
Anxiety disorders on their own are a different matter. The sertraline label covers OCD, panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety. The Wellbutrin XL label covers none of them. Small trials of bupropion for panic, PTSD and OCD did not show a benefit, per Psychiatric Times.
If you feel jittery in the first weeks on either drug, say so at your next check in. Your prescriber can look at the dose, the timing and whether a different medicine fits better.
Can You Take Wellbutrin With an SSRI?
Yes, and the pairing has been studied. In STAR*D, 565 people still unwell after about 12 weeks of citalopram had bupropion SR added. About 30 percent reached remission, the same as with buspirone added instead. Fewer people quit bupropion over side effects, 12.5 percent against 20.6 percent.
The pairing needs care. Bupropion blocks a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, so it can raise blood levels of fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline. In one study on the label, it raised citalopram levels by 30 to 40 percent. Your prescriber may start the SSRI lower for that reason.
Two label rules with no exceptions. Never take two bupropion products at the same time. Never take bupropion within 14 days of an MAOI antidepressant, before or after. Any switch or add on is a decision for you and your prescriber, never a change to make alone.
Which One Fits Which Person
No list can choose for you. These are the points that tend to tip the choice, drawn from the labels and studies above.
- Leans toward bupropion. Low energy and drive, sexual side effects on an SSRI, worry about weight gain, seasonal depression, or a goal to stop smoking.
- Leans toward an SSRI. OCD, panic disorder, PTSD or social anxiety, or depression with heavy anxiety.
- Rules out bupropion. A seizure disorder, past or present bulimia or anorexia, sudden stopping of alcohol or sedatives, or an MAOI in the last 14 days.
- Same for both. Each label carries a boxed warning about suicidal thoughts in children, teens and young adults, mostly early on or after a dose change.

Questions From the Field
Is Wellbutrin an SSRI?
No. Wellbutrin is bupropion, an NDRI. It acts on norepinephrine and dopamine. The FDA label says it does not block the reuptake of serotonin, which is what SSRIs do.
Are Wellbutrin and Zoloft both SSRIs?
No. Zoloft (sertraline) is an SSRI. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is not. They work on different brain chemicals, and they can be taken together when a prescriber checks the doses.
Is Wellbutrin dopamine or serotonin?
Dopamine and norepinephrine. Bupropion weakly blocks the reuptake of both. It has no real effect on serotonin, which is why its side effects differ from SSRIs.
Is Wellbutrin an SNRI?
No. An SNRI, like venlafaxine or duloxetine, acts on serotonin and norepinephrine. Bupropion acts on norepinephrine and dopamine, so it sits in its own group.
Do you gain weight on Wellbutrin?
Most people do not. In short trials on the label, 14 percent on 300 mg a day lost more than 5 pounds, and only 3 percent gained more than 5 pounds. Talk with your prescriber before using it for weight.
Which is better for anxiety, Wellbutrin or an SSRI?
For anxiety that comes with depression, a 10 trial analysis found them about equal. For OCD, panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety, SSRIs such as sertraline are FDA approved and bupropion is not.
Can I switch from an SSRI to Wellbutrin?
Yes, with your prescriber's plan. In STAR*D, about 1 in 4 people reached remission after switching from citalopram to bupropion SR. Never stop or start either drug on your own.
Can you drink alcohol while taking bupropion?
Ask your prescriber first. The label warns that suddenly stopping heavy drinking can trigger a seizure on bupropion. Tell your prescriber how much you really drink before you start.
