How to Take Dexmethylphenidate
Your prescriber decides your form, dose and timing. Take doses early enough in the day to protect your sleep. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow XR capsules whole, or sprinkle them on applesauce and take it right away if your prescriber says so. If you miss a morning dose, ask your prescriber whether to skip it rather than take it late.
Dexmethylphenidate is a Schedule II controlled substance with a risk of misuse and dependence. Take it only as prescribed, lock it up and never share it. How Dexmethylphenidate Works
Dexmethylphenidate blocks the recycling of dopamine and norepinephrine. More of these signals stay active where the brain plans, focuses and holds back impulses.
Focalin XR capsules release about half the dose right away and the rest about four hours later. This acts like two doses from one capsule. As it wears off, some people feel irritable or tired. Tell your prescriber if that happens, since a change in timing may help.
Before You Start Focalin
Your prescriber asks about heart problems, fainting, high blood pressure and any family history of sudden death. They also ask about bipolar disorder, psychosis, tics, glaucoma and past substance use. MAOI antidepressants must never be combined with it.
